'33 Trees' is the brand new EP from Guiguisuisui, consisting of side A and side B, each a 20 minute ambient journey through forests, mountains, temples, arriving at the center of the mind. The EP was composed recorder over a few days in the last weeks of 2019, mixed and mastered , and then dubbed on to a limited run of 33 recycled cassette tapes, each with its own unique look and sound, by Nugget Records, all in Beijing.
Side A features samples and field recordings taken from Guiguisuisui’s travels around the world, including UK, Poland, and Taiwan, taking the listening on a journey through different realms before arriving at the forest where the encounter the vocals of 靜電場朔Dian, a Chinese musician and artist who has been living in Tokyo for the past decade. Singing half in an invented language and half in English, her vocal performance evokes comparisons to Bjork and Jónsi of Sigur Rós. The MV for Side A features a short version of the track and visuals created by Nan Guazi using Tagtool and heavy FX processing, an integral part of Guiguisuisui’s live performance. Side B takes a darker turn in the vein of drone ambient, featuring Guiguisuisui’s main vocalist Nan Guazi chants and hymns drifting over mountains of heavily processed guitars, before arriving at the destination of down tempo beats and moody bass tones.
Why 33 trees? For one thing 2020 will mark 33 years on planet Earth for both members of Guiguisuisui. Secondly, while we love what we do traveling around and sharing our art it's sometimes at odds with our attempts to lead more sustainable lifestyles, so we're going to donate to have 33 trees planted due to this tour to go someway to offset the carbon footprint of our journey (we will also travel by train and boat, hopefully only a few flights will be involved). Thirdly, the physical version of the EP is strictly limited to 33 cassette tapes which use recycled cassettes.
